Top and bottom

Unlike open shelving, a bookshelf includes a top and bottom in the horizontal count. Three intermediate shelves means five horizontals plus two uprights.

Construction varies

This list is a starting carcass: sides between a top and bottom, shelves in the opening, optional back. Confirm rebates, toekick, doors and hardware before you cut.

Worked example

800 × 1800 × 300 mm, three intermediate shelves, no back. Uprights are 1800 × 300; each horizontal is 764 × 300.

Questions

How is this different from shelving?

Shelving is an open bay: uprights and shelves only. This page always adds a top and bottom.
